The Department of Medicine at Pune’s KEM Hospital was started in the early 1970s by Dr. V. R. Pai, Dr. F. F. Wadia, and Dr. K.M. Gangwal. Among the stalwarts in various specialities who helped develop it were Dr. B.B. Gokhale (dermatology), Dr. M. K. Kale (pulmonology) and Dr.

The Department expanded by leaps and bounds in the 1980s with many more consultants joining in internal medicine, as well as super specialties like cardiology, nephrology, neurology, gastro-enterology, endocrinology, and intensive care. The Department of Medicine has been involved in several clinical trials on drugs related to various disease/conditions, such as, Parkinson’s Disease, Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, etc.
