Dr. C. S. Yajnik

A world-renowned diabetologist and researcher, Prof. Yajnik has been Director of the Diabetes Unit at KEMHRC since 1993. Trained in clinical diabetology, and research methodology in diabetes at the Sheikh Rashid Diabetes Unit, Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, UK, Dr. Yajnik also has a Fellowship from the Department of Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Dr. Yajnik has long been associated with investigations into the high susceptibility of Indians to diabetes and related disorders. He is well known for his description of the ‘thin fat Indian’ and the contribution of nutritional intrauterine programming to this phenotype. He has famously attributed vitamin B12 deficiency and deranged 1-C metabolism as the mother to these phenomena.
Dr. Yajnik set up the first centre of excellence in diabetology research in western India, and has been Principal Investigator in 48 clinical trials. He has also been an Expert Reviewer for prestigious journals such as Lancet, Diabetes Care, International Journal of Epidemiology, and National Medical Journal of India.
